Before you ride

Learn about pre ride safety precaution recommendations and more.

To make your ride as enjoyable as possible, it's a good idea to carry out some simple bike checks before stepping on to the pedals. Additionally checking your equipment and clothing to make sure you are as safe as you can be to maximise the enjoyment of your ride.

Lights

Follow this checklist for your lights before you ride:

  • if the weather is bad day or night
  • never cycle at night without lights
  • front lamp, showing white light
    • positioned centrally up to 1500mm from the ground, aligned towards
  • rear lamp, coloured red
    • positioned centrally between 350mm and 1500mm from the ground
  • any number of additional lights may be added providing they follow the conditions above

Reflectors

All reflectors should follow this guide:

  • rear reflectors are required by law
    • clean
    • visible
    • coloured red
    • positioned centrally
    • between 350mm and 900mm from the ground
  • pedal reflectors after 1 October 1985 are required by law
    • clean
    • visible
    • coloured amber
    • recommended to have 4
    • visible from the front and rear

Tyres

Your tyres should follow this guide:

  • check the marked pressure on the tyre sidewall
  • check for cuts, marks or excessive wear
  • type of tyre is suitable for what you plan on using it for e.g. road, mountain

Brakes

Check your brakes with the following:

  • positioned correctly
  • test them out to make sure they are working
  • front and rear
  • if you're worried, go to a bike shop

Equipment and clothing

What you should wear before you ride:

  • comply with National Safety Standard
  • helmet
    • always replace after an incident
    • ask for fitting advice
    • adjusted to fit your head
  • clothing
    • bright
    • reflective

Saddle

Follow this guide for your seat:

  • correct height so you can touch the ground with at least half your foot
  • comfortable
  • check for wears or tears
  • secure
