Sewing machinists stitch pieces of material together to make clothing, accessories, and soft furnishings.
- Stitching pieces of fabric together using a sewing machine
- Either making an entire item or just sewing one part
- Loading pieces such as collars and cuffs into computer-controlled machines
- Checking the finished work to make sure there are no mistakes
- Oiling the sewing machines and doing other tasks to keep them running well
Sewing machinists mainly work in factories. They spend a lot of time sitting down at sewing machines.
Sewing machinists normally work between 37 and 40 hours a week.
Starting salary: 拢15,500
Experienced salary: up to 拢21,000
You could apply directly to work as a sewing machinist. Employers would normally expect you to have basic sewing skills and the ability to read and understand written pattern instructions. Most companies would ask you to take a practical test at the interview. Sewing skills developed at home could help you to get a job. College - You could start off by doing a Level 1 Certificate in Textiles Most employers will ask for some GCSEs however some will be more flexible.
You could also apply for an apprenticeship. If you have an EHCP you may be able to apply under the DfE exemption which allows the apprentice to use Entry level 3 English and Maths qualifications. The apprentice would have to be component enough to successfully achieve all other aspects of the apprenticeship requirements, become occupationally competent and achieve Entry Level 3 in English and Maths before the end of their apprenticeship.
