The 7 areas of learning
There are 7 areas of learning and development which must shape educational programmes in early years settings.
The prime areas; communication and language, personal, social and emotional development and physical development lay the foundations for all future learning.
The specific areas; literacy, mathematics, understanding the world and expressive arts and design then build on this and provide children with the knowledge and skills to flourish in society.
Development matters is non-statutory guidance which helps us to understand how we can support child development across the 7 areas of learning. They support us in our assessment of children by breaking down development into 3 stages; birth to 3, 3 to 4 year olds and reception class.
Alternatively, Birth to 5 matters uses 6 broad developmental ranges as a tool to help assess child development.
The following resources have been chosen to support understanding of each of the 7 areas when planning and delivering your early years curriculum.
